Fring Announce Skype Video Calling For Symbian

fring

The long awaited video calling over the popular Skype service is now available for a small selection of Nokia handsets running Symbian by using the great Fring application.

Those handsets supported right now, according to the Fring blog post are all S60 5th Edition touch phones, so the 5800, N97, X6 etc.  And also a few S60 3rd Edition handsets including the N95, N96 8Gig and the N82.

I have yet to give this a whirl on my Nokia N86, so will report back if it works.

You can download the Fring application, which is a little over 1Mb, by visiting m.fring.com in your phones web browser, and follow the instructions.

For a video demo, check out the YouTube clip after the jump.

Spotify Application is Released For Symbian Handsets

spotify

Music sharing service Spotify have today released their much anticipated application for Symbian powered handsets.

Their client is available for Symbian 3rd and 5th Edition, so should work on many touchscreen, and non-touchscreen devices.  See HERE for a full list of supported handsets, to which I’m sure they will add more in coming months.

To download the client to your handset, point the web browser on your device to m.spotify.com and it should be obvious from there.

Live Demo Video of Nokia Money

Nokia Money is a new service being trialled by Nokia as a way to transfer money between friends and family, or even to pay things such as utility bills and to top-up a PAYG mobile phone.

Nokia Conversations blog has just put up a short(ish) video with a quick demonstration of the Nokia Money application, and gives some examples of real world scenarios.

I expect this basic form of money transactions to be mainly popular in developing countries, where it is sometimes difficult for people to use banking services.  Also, for instance, Nokia is one of the most trusted brands, in countries such as India, so they are playing to their strengths in many ways.

Recommended Podcast Listening

Podcast

Granted, they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I am a great fan of podcasts.

I have a 2 hour commute to work a few times a week, so I get plenty of time to listen to them rather than the irritating Jo Whiney (or similar) on Radio 1.

I use the built in S60 Podcasting application on my N86, then use the FM transmitter to listen to them through my car speakers.  It works well, and is a nice set up.

So here is my, not too long, recommended list of podcasts for the discerning gadget fan.

gReader For Symbian Preview

Rita over at Symbian-Guru has just posted her exclusive preview of a rather tasty looking native Symbian application for Google Reader, developed by MojosStudios.  The app is unimaginatively titled gReader, but no bother, as it explains exactly what it says on the tin.  Previously, the only real other way to get to your Google Reader feeds was through the mobile website, but this was both awkward, and not a particularly nice experience.

The application itself looks pretty good, and definately in it’s final stages of beta, ready for launch.

There doesn’t seem to be any word on pricing yet though.

For me personally though, this is going to have to work very hard to get me to replace Gravity on my N97.  Jan has just recently added support for Google Reader into Gravity (alpha testing only right now), and although lacking on a few features right now, I’m sure will get up to speed soon.

Definitely go and check out Rita’s preview of gReader though.  It is well worth a read.

Why Symbian Needs to Add Power Management Profiles

So I’m sitting here in Starbucks irritatingly eyeing the Macbook Pro user across the way.  He has an advertised 7 hours, or some other random figure of battery life in his laptop, but yet he is sat next to the power socket.  This irritates me, because, as a fellow human being he should automatically know that because I have an Dell XPS laptop I cannot stray away from the 50Hz boog-a-loo juice for more than about 10 minutes.

I know he has seen what type of laptop I’m using, because he had that sly raising of the eyebrows as he saw me sit down.  Every Mac user suffer from this affliction when they come across a PC user.  I know he’s muttering under his breath “I’m a Mac, and that muppet is the PC, in this towns Starbucks”.  Hell, he probably even Twitter’d, “LOLZ, PC just walked in, and I’m hogging the power socket.  Steve Jobs 4eva”.

What do I do?  Well, I do what any self-respecting PC owner does, and put my laptop into ‘Power Saver’ mode.  What this does is clamp the CPU to 800MHz maximum ceiling, dims the display, turns off any unnecessary ports, and a few other bits of trickery that I don’t have to worry about.

Easy.

My laptop battery should now last 20 minutes, instead of 10.  Just long enough for me to drink my coffee, and then head off to the Apple Store.

Job done.

Or is it?

What do I do when my Symbian powered smart phone powerhouse starts to run low in the juice department?  Well, surely that is obvious isn’t it?  My N97 is advertised as a mobile computer.  Therefore it will have a power saver function, just like my laptop, won’t it?

Nope.

What I want to be able to do, is give a quick press of the power button, and then select a ‘Power Saver’ profile.  Wouldn’t this be cool?  Not to have to worry about anything.

It’s 3pm in the afternoon, and I’m worried that my phone battery won’t last through the commute home.  What will I do for an hour on the train?  What will I do to stop me having eye contact with the weirdo sat in seat 12?  Pick up the mangled copy of this mornings The Sun, only to find it’s got the remains of a builders cheese and pickle sandwich smeared between pages 5 and 6?

Of course I’m not.  I want to do something to my phone to ensure that I’ve got enough power to make it through a quick email checking, Facebook browsing train ride home.

I suppose I could turn my phone off until said commute.  That wouldn’t be productive.

I tell you what.  I could:

  • Dim the screen
  • Turn off WLAN searching
  • Stop Nokia Messaging
  • Turn off the 3G radios
  • Etc etc etc

You get the idea, but the problem is, I have to do all these things individually.  I want a centralized option, where I can tell my phone to do all of these things, without having to muck about for half an hour trying to remember where all the setting are, seeing as the menu structure seems to blooming change, just slightly, on every different Symbian phone I use.  By the time I’ve found the bloody option to dim the screen, the screen, at full brightness, will have already chomped it’s way through a sizeable portion of my already precious milliwatts.

Many years ago, we sent a man to the moon.  Sure adding a Power Saver profile to Symbian isn’t beyond the realms of possibility is it?

Comments on whether you think I am taking rubbish, or “There’s an app for that”, are, as always, welcome.

Ovi Store Listens to Customers. At Last.

Since the Ovi Store botched launch a few months ago, users have been bemoaning that quite a few features are either not working, or just plain not implemented.

Just recently, I have read a number of forum threads from users complaining of an inability to login to the Ovi Store.  Ordinarily I’d just count them as muppet syndrome, of someone not being able to use T9 correctly.  However, the problem is far too common IMO to just be a user derived problem.

How To Setup Mail for Exchange with Gmail on Symbian

With the news yesterday coming in that Google had added Push Gmail functionality to Google Sync for the iPhone and WinMo devices, I thought Symbian had been left out in the cold, once again.  However, thanks to a tip from @gerrymoth on Twitter (also on the great nokiaaddict.com) S60 does in fact work.  Google just forgot to pimp it for the smartphone platform with gazillions of users the planet over.

So, here is a few screenshots of the settings you will need to enter to sync your contacts, calendar and email with your Google account. Please be WARNED though, to make sure to do a full back up beforehand, as one setting wrong, and you may well lose your precious data.

The data on my phone is always my working data, so when prompted, I opted to ‘Keep items on phone’.  This worked well for me, but obviously you will need to decide on your best course of action with that.

This guide is for S60 5th Edition, but 3rd Edition should work with the same settings, it will obviously just look a bit different.

Twitter Apps for S60 – Gravity vs Dabr

I’ve been using Twitter for a year or so now, although I mainly ‘read’ rather than ‘tweet’, to mainly keep instantly up to date with all things mobile.  You can follow me on Twitter HERE.

Finding out the best way to ‘Tweet’ from from my old N82 had always been an easy decision.  Use m.dabr.co.uk.  The great simple web interface, with it’s minimal design, but easy navigation packed in with much more than just replys, retweets and twitpics was an easily winning combination.  Oh, and I forgot the best part, it’s free!

Then, a new kid started hanging around the Symbian block going by the name of Gravity.  Backed up by very good feedback from some of the beta testers, it looked like this native S60 application was going to take the Twitter world by storm.  I just had to try it out.

Spotify For S60 Previewed

The ever-so popular music streaming service Spotify has just previewed it’s upcoming application for the S60 platform.  Now, I’m going to go out on a limb here, and say that this will be one of the hottest S60 applications of the year.

I personally am not into music quite so much as other people, so won’t be a massive user of this particular service, but I can see why almost everyone raves about it.

Judging from the video preview, the application looks to work very nicely, and has some great features.  Particularly the offline mode, which will be utilised by almost all users I would imagine.

Check out the video below.  You will no doubt be impressed.
