Stefan over at IntoMobile is reporting the news that Nokia has decided to “align it’s research and development operations”, which ultimately means the loss of 330 positions to redundancy.  Yes, it does say that it will do it’s best to find new positions within the company, but all press releases of this nature say that.

I would also pick up on this particular sentence, “in line with the company’s focussed portfolio of future products”.  Generally speaking, focussed  = less.  So is that the shot that Nokia are sending that in the next 12 months or so they will be cutting down on the number of new handsets that they take to market?  I would presume so, and all on a cost cutting model, in this difficult financial position.

Lets wait and see in what area of the market this ‘focussing’ is to take place, but if they ‘focus’ too much in any area, there is plenty of upcoming competition to step into their shoes.

I for one, hope they continue with their core business of mobile devices, and let R&D in things such as the Nokia Home Music Stereo fall by the wayside.
