With the news yesterday coming in that Google had added Push Gmail functionality to Google Sync for the iPhone and WinMo devices, I thought Symbian had been left out in the cold, once again.  However, thanks to a tip from @gerrymoth on Twitter (also on the great nokiaaddict.com) S60 does in fact work.  Google just forgot to pimp it for the smartphone platform with gazillions of users the planet over.

So, here is a few screenshots of the settings you will need to enter to sync your contacts, calendar and email with your Google account. Please be WARNED though, to make sure to do a full back up beforehand, as one setting wrong, and you may well lose your precious data.

The data on my phone is always my working data, so when prompted, I opted to ‘Keep items on phone’.  This worked well for me, but obviously you will need to decide on your best course of action with that.

This guide is for S60 5th Edition, but 3rd Edition should work with the same settings, it will obviously just look a bit different.

First off, if you haven’t got Mail for Exchange installed, you will need to go and download it. Check you applications folder first though, as it may be in there.

Once you have it installed, and open it, it will ask you to set up a new profile, and you want to click ‘Yes’, naturally.

CONNECTION
Exchange Server: m.google.com
Secure Connection: Yes
Access Point: Your preferred method of connecting to the internet
Sync Whilst Roaming: Up to you, although I would recommend ‘No’, unless you are a millionaire.
Use Default Port: Yes

Next up is the credentials options.

CREDENTIALS
Username: Your full Google username including the @gmail.com or @googlemail.com
Password: Obvious enough I hope
Domain: None (When I first setup MfE, it wanted something in here.  I set it as m.google.com initially, then once the profile is setup, went back and deleted it).

SYNC SCHEDULE
These settings are completely up to you.  The more often you sync, the more data, and more battery power you will use.  If you are unsure, or not on an unlimited data plan, I would recommend choosing ‘Manual’.

Here’s how I have mine set:

CALENDAR
If you want your Google Calendar synced to your phone, then obviously chose ‘Yes’ like below.  Otherwise chose ‘No’.  Remember to decide if you want to use the items in your phone, or the items Google already has as your ‘working data’.  If you didn’t do a backup beforehand, I really recommend you do one right now before going any further.

TASKS
Tasks sync is not yet supported by Google, so you should set it as below.

CONTACTS
If you have got this far, hopefully, nothing too complicated in the settings for this one.

EMAIL
Synchronise email: Yes, if you want to get your Gmail on your phone
Email Address: Your full Google email address
New Mail Popup: This will show a dialogue when new mail arrives.  Your choice.
Signature:You can add one if you so wish
When Sending Mail: You will probably want this set to immediately
Sync Messages Back: Depends how popular you are really

Now you want to click to save your profile, and give it a whirl.
